Tips for Moving into a Rental Property

Lifestyle

8 Nov

Moving house can be an exciting process, and it can also be daunting. There is a lot to organise with the new property as well as ensuring you follow the rules when leaving your previous home. Read our top tips for moving into a rental property.

Ensure you’ve tied up loose ends

By loose ends, we mean your previous property. Before you give notice, always check your rental agreement thoroughly for when you are eligible to move out, how much notice you have to give and by what means. Ensure you stick to the rules of the agreement to avoid any disagreements about recouping your deposit. Check the property carefully for any damage and get it repaired properly. Always keep receipts and take photographs as evidence. Cleaning the property before you vacate is also of utmost importance if you want to get your deposit back. To take away any hassle, consider hiring a company that deals with end of lease cleaning Islington based.

Begin packing early

As soon as you have decided to move, start packing up your belongings. The earlier you begin this process, the less stressful and hurried it will be. Buy some heavy-duty cardboard boxes, or ask around if anyone has some, and start packing up the non-essentials such as ornaments and miscellaneous drawers. Always pack items together that will go into the same room together in your new property. A bit of forethought here will save lots of time when you unpack again.

Get rid of anything you no longer need

Packing up to move house is a great opportunity to have a clear out. There’s no point in spending extra time and effort moving items that you no longer want to keep. So, when packing up, be ruthless. Anything you no longer want can be given to a charity shop or recycled in some other way. This is another good reason to begin the packing process early.

Label boxes clearly

Always label your boxes with the room they need to go into and a brief description of what’s in the box. Be sure to write both on the side of the box and the top, so you can still see labels when they are stacked. This will make life much easier when you arrive at your new home and the boxes can go straight into the correct rooms.

Pack a camping bag

Over the first day or two in your new house, you’ll still be unpacking boxes but you’ll need certain things on hand. Toiletries and a change of clothes are important. Also, it might be sensible to have a kettle, some cups, and your cleaning products to hand for when you first arrive in your new home.

Redirect your post

It’s easy to forget tasks like redirecting your post, but it’s important to ensure a stress-free move. It takes a while to individually email or ring all of your contacts, such as your bank and dentist surgery, so redirecting your post for a month or two will take the pressure off.
