The world is full of trash – in the oceans, on the roads, in the stomachs of whales, everywhere. We are responsible for the degradation of the environment. We thought that we would not do any harm to the only planet that we call home. Unfortunately, we threw trash everywhere. But all hope is not lost. With the advancements in technology, we can still do some things that will help the environment recover from our own wrongdoing. There are seven billion people on the planet, and if each one can pick up just one piece of garbage, then the world will be almost free of waste.
Use reusables
Plastic straws are one of the most offensive types of trash ever invented by humans. They are only suitable for one use, and they end up in rivers, oceans, etc. It’s a good thing some innovators thought of ways to reduce plastic straw use: metal and bamboo straws. They are more environmentally friendly, and you can reuse them over and over again. Plastic water bottles are another thing. We chuck bottles in the bin after each use. Why not bring your own reusable water bottle and fill it up every time it gets empty?
Bring your own grocery bags
Stores use plastic bags to pack customers’ purchases. Instead of using these plastic bags that will inevitably end up where they are not supposed to, invest in sturdy and washable grocery bags, you can put your stuff into. Always have several in your car so you can just grab them on your way to the store.
Repurpose recyclables
Big plastic containers need not be thrown away. Look for ways you can use them. You can use them as planters for your garden. If you don’t like the way they look, you can get creative and paint them with your favorite colors.
Reduce waste
Keep leftover food for later. Do not throw it out right away. You can still use it for other recipes or reheat and eat it. Although food waste is totally biodegradable, you can still reduce your waste by serving only the amount that you can consume and eating any leftovers at a later time. When buying fresh produce such as meat, bring your own reusable container so you don’t have to put it in plastic bags that you will, later on, throw in the bin.
Compost
If food waste is inevitable, you can compost it to become soil fertilizer. Proper composting will decompose waste properly. If it ends up in landfills, there will not be enough oxygen and moisture to decompose it properly.
Pick up trash
Pick up small pieces of trash you chance upon and throw them in the nearest bin. This simple gesture will have a significant impact on the environment.
