When you’re just married, decorating the home you share is a thrilling way to reinforce your bond. It can help to keep that honeymoon feeling going and to create a space in which everything you see reminds you of your love. From shopping to DIY to enjoying the fruits of your labour, you’ll find that everything becomes magical when you do it together.
Blending your styles
Inevitably, there are going to be points on which you and your new spouse differ. Even if one of you is happy to give way on everything, it’s better to share out the decisions or find compromises you’re both happy with, as this will keep resentment from developing. It’s also fun to get to know one another’s tastes and create something unique by bringing them together, as well as sharing the pieces of furniture and other objects that have personal importance to each of you.
In the bedroom
As a newly married couple, you’re likely to be spending a lot of time in the bedroom, so treat yourselves to a really good quality bed in the largest size that will comfortably fit. A good mattress is well worth investing in – memory foam is particularly good for keeping one person from being woken if the other is turning over a lot during the night. Add a touch of luxury with some soft faux fur throws and use soft sheepskin rugs to make the floor feel wonderful underfoot.
In the living room
Never mind the traditional three piece suite – although you’ll want to have some chairs for guests, a loveseat is ideal for when the two of you want to snuggle up together in front of the TV. Give the room a romantic touch with details like a chandelier, a cosy fireplace and old fashioned window shutters. Make sure you have some display space for your wedding photos and other mementos of your special day.
In the bathroom
A bath that’s big enough to share is a wonderful place to spend time together, and even more so if it’s a Jacuzzi. Make sure there’s room at the side for wine glasses. Little touches like a waterproof .mp3 player and shelves where you can stand candles really add to the atmosphere. Don’t feel you need to stick to tired old bathroom colour schemes – get in the mood with a splash of ruby or plum and brighten the room with mirrors.
In the kitchen
Cooking together really adds to the magic of sharing a home and a beautiful kitchen is a great place to spend time. Make sure that it contains everything you need to impress each other with your favourite dishes – and add a dishwasher so you don’t have to fight over who does the dishes afterwards. Consider accessories like engraved glassware made to celebrate your wedding, or a commemorative dinner service.
Whatever you choose to do, setting up the home where you will spend the first years of your married life is an experience you’ll never forget.
