Don’t complain about your last job
You know how it is – don’t talk about the ex on a first date. No matter what kind of experience you may have had in your last role, badmouthing the organisation or your previous boss won’t do you any favours at your new gig. Even if you think that it’ll help you connect with your colleagues or show your loyalty to the new organisation, all it’ll do is add fuel to the fire of office gossip. You don’t want to be known as the person who’s always complaining, and you don’t want your colleagues to avoid you or worry about how you’ll talk about them.
Don’t alienate your coworkers
You might think of your new organisation as a chance for you to finally get the break you deserve. And if you’re new and don’t know too many people, you might feel the need to keep your head down and do the hard work. And pushing yourself for greater success is commendable, but make sure that you’re not ignoring or disregarding your colleagues in the process. You don’t want to come across as arrogant or standoffish or as someone who can’t be a team player. Accept offers of help if your coworkers make them and try to be polite to everyone you meet. This will make your life at work a whole lot easier.
Don’t assume anything
The contract that you received when you accepted the job probably had most of the details about your employment. But there are some things that you only learn by doing. So, don’t make assumptions about them. Make sure you ask HR about things like working hours, or when to clock in before the first day. And when you start working on projects, clarify the procedure that you’re expected to follow. Even if you had a similar role in your last job, there’s a high chance that each company has its own rules, and it won’t hurt to clarify them.
One of the most basic mistakes that people make when you’re new to an organization is to overshare personal information in order to endear yourself to your coworkers. And that’s not a great idea. Especially if you want to talk about confidential information or controversial subjects like religion or politics. When you’re getting to know your colleagues for the first time, it’s best to be as neutral as possible, as you don’t yet know who to trust and who’s likely to talk about you behind your back. So, make sure that you keep a lid on your personal information.
Don’t say no to learning
If you’re working at one of the top new startups in Bangalore, you’re going to have a lot of opportunities come your way. And a lot of these will be at your discretion. Make sure that you avail as many opportunities as possible in order to keep learning and growing. These days it’s not enough to stop studying after college, you have to constantly keep upskilling yourself to stay relevant. Even if you have experience in the field and enjoy old routines, don’t be afraid to learn new things. It’s definitely going to come in handy during your career.
In general, make sure that you’re being courteous and respectful when you’re starting a new job. Treat it as an opportunity for you to learn and go in with an open mind. You’ll be just fine.
